FAQs About Technology & Screen Time for Preschoolers
October 5, 2020
If you’re the parent of a 3 to 5-year-old, your child is generally considered a new screen user and is just being introduced to the world of technology. Typically, new screen users are beginning to watch programs more on a smartphone or tablet, and potentially playing games as well. As parents of new screen users, this is the perfect age to begin teaching your kids important time management skills to ensure they grow up to be responsible screen users and to live healthy, well-balanced lives.
How do you introduce technology to preschoolers?
- Be a part of your child’s screen time.
- Have a full understanding of what your child is being exposed to during his or her screen time.
- Schedule plenty of non-screen time into your child’s day.
What is the recommended screen time for preschoolers?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children in the new screen user age group of 3 to 5 years old be limited to 1 hour of screen time per day. Parents should focus this time on learning opportunities whether it be a TV program, interactive app, ebook, or other educational content.
